The Cloud-Clipper’s First Azure Audit Checklist

Put your Governance, Policy, and RBAC knowledge to the test.

We’ve covered the core concepts of Azure structure, policy guardrails, and access security. Now, it's time to put on your Auditor hat. Whether you just spun up a personal free tier account or walked into a messy enterprise cloud sandbox, use this checklist to ensure your environment is safe, organized, and budget-friendly.

PHASE 1 Hierarchy & Organization Audit

Goal: Make sure resources aren't scattered around like a messy bedroom.

Lifecycle Alignment: Verify that resources inside your Resource Groups share the same lifecycle. Are testing VMs accidentally sitting in production Resource Groups?

No "Default" Groups: Ensure no critical production workloads are hiding inside automatically created default Resource Groups (like NetworkWatcherRG).

PHASE 2 Tagging & Budget Safety

Goal: Ensure every single dollar spent can be traced back to an owner.

The Big Three Tags: Check if your major infrastructure assets have at least three core tags: Environment, Owner, and CostCenter.

Inheritance Verification: Remember that tags don't automatically cascade downwards! Audit your individual resources to ensure they match the tags on their parent Resource Group.

PHASE 3 Guardrails & Policy Enforcement

Goal: Automate your rules so nobody can break them by mistake.

Geographic Boundaries: Is the "Allowed Locations" policy active? Confirm that developers cannot accidentally spin up assets in random, high-latency global regions.

SKU Guardrails: Check if there is an active Azure Policy blocking massive, enterprise-grade VM sizes that could drain your credits overnight.

PHASE 4 RBAC & The Master Keys

Goal: Lock down security using the Principle of Least Privilege.

Count Your Owners: Run a review on who holds the Owner role at the Subscription level. (Rule of thumb: Keep this number under 3 individuals!).

Scope Check: Ensure permissions are assigned at the lowest functional level. If someone only manages a single web app, their role should be scoped to that specific Resource Group, not the whole subscription.

Want to see your compliance status visually? Type "Azure Policy" into the global search bar in the portal and check your Compliance Dashboard. Azure will automatically give your environment a grade based on how well you're following your rules!
